About St Simons
Here is some info about St Simons from the wiki:
“St. Simons is a census-designated place (CDP) located on St. Simons Island in Glynn County, Georgia. Both the community and the island are commonly considered to be one location, known simply as “St. Simons Island”, or locally as “The Island”. St. Simons is part of the Brunswick, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area, and according to the 2000 census, the CDP had a population of 13,381.
St. Simons Island is one of Georgia’s renowned Golden Isles (along with Sea Island, Jekyll Island, and privately owned Little St. Simons Island). It is also the largest of the Golden Isles. After being cultivated by English colonists for rice and cotton plantations worked by large populations of African slaves, who created the unique Gullah culture, the island since the early 20th century has been developed as a resort community. It has many seasonal residents, as well as a steady base of year-round residents. Many of the residents have settled here after retiring in other parts of Georgia or the United States.”
Georgiaencyclopedia.org says this:
“The second-largest and most developed of Georgia’s barrier islands, St. Simons is approximately twelve miles long and nearly three miles wide at its widest stretch (roughly the size of Manhattan Island in New York). The island is located in Glynn County on Georgia’s coast and lies east of Brunswick (the seat of Glynn County), south of Little St. Simons Island and the Hampton River, and north of Jekyll Island. The resort community of Sea Island is separated from St. Simons on the east by the Black Banks River. Known for its oak tree canopies and historic landmarks, St. Simons is both a tourist destination and, according to the 2000 U.S. census, home to more than 13,000 permanent residents.”
The Georgia.gov site says this:
“Glynn County’s coastal location is a recreational haven for residents and visitors alike. The county features 207 holes of golf, as well as beautiful beaches on the four coastal islands.
The Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation is a state-run park that is a classic example of a working rice plantation from around 1807.
Several famous individuals are from Glynn County. They include author Bill Diehl, tobacco magnate R.J. Reynolds, noted architect William Portman, and PGA golfer Davis Love, III. Glynn County is home to several annual festivals and cultural events. Brunswick hosts an Old Town Tour of Homes in April, a King Fish Tournament in June, and the Blessing of the Shrimp Fleet every Mother’s Day. Jekyll Island features an Art Festival in March, a Beach Music Festival in August, and a Bluegrass Festival in December.”
