About Isle of Palms

We get this from the Isle of Palms wiki:

Isle of Palms is a city in Charleston County, South Carolina, United States. … Isle of Palms is a barrier island on the South Carolina coast. As defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, and used by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes only, Isle of Palms is included within the Charleston-North Charleston-Summerville metropolitan area and the Charleston-North Charleston Urbanized Area.

The following comes from the city web site:

“The Isle of Palms, an Atlantic barrier island, has prided itself on being a family beach that is the perfect blend of approximately 5,000 full time residents and 20,000 to 50,000 investment owners and visitors who make it their home and destination. In 2002, the City was the first in the State of South Carolina to achieve the Blue Wave Designation from the Clean Beaches Council who recognizes environmentally well-managed beaches. The city has successfully kept this designation every year since.

The entire 7-mile long and 1 mile wide island is an incorporated municipality. Having incorporated in 1953, the City recently celebrated its 50th Anniversary in a weekend long celebration that is still being talked about by those who attended. Attorney J.C. Long developed the island after World War II as an affordable place where service people could buy homes and raise a family. Some of those original families and their descendants are still on the island today.”

Sailors gearing up for Charleston Race Week

by admin on April 11, 2011

We get this from a recent press release on Charleston Race week which is coming up April 14-17:

279 boats take to the water for 2011 Sperry Top-Sider Charleston Race Week, preparations are ramping up to welcome the 2000 sailors and support personnel to the largest keelboat regatta in North America in more than five years.

Race Director Randy Draftz has his hands full, though he took time out last weekend to serve as a guest speaker at US Sailing’s Yacht Club Summit in Chicago, IL. ‘It was great to see Charleston Race Week recognized by the National Governing Body for the work everyone has done to turn this into such a successful event,’ Draftz said. ‘Hopefully the information I was able to share about what has worked for us will be used by others to help their events gain the popularity we enjoy.’
