About Key West FL

Here is a nice excerpt from the local chamber of commerce site:

“Key West is just a short and picturesque drive from Miami, Florida down US-1. The Florida Keys hold a lot of treasures for the traveler. The islands offer a tropical blend of azure waters, tropical foliage, fine dining with fresh seafood available daily, and accommodations for any budget, some with a history of notorious and notable figures.

The laid back lifestyle, southern charm and Caribbean flavor are what make Key West what it is today. Figures throughout history have visited Key West, some making it their permanent home for a while, others enjoying the tropical climate while they escape the harsh winter.

Key West has a lot to offer tourists from around the globe. Our Key West hotels offer a broad range of amenities. While some visitors may enjoy a quaint bed and breakfast or guesthouse tucked away on an Old Town Key West lane, others love to be pampered and would enjoy one of the waterfront resorts and luxury hotels that dot the island. Of course Key West also has a few chain hotels to suit travelers looking to just make a quick weekend getaway

Key West has plenty of things to do. World class fishing exists both on the shallow water flats and in the deep blue sea beyond our barrier coral reef. The shallow flats offer tarpon, bonefish, permit and barracuda plus many other species to take a cast at. The offshore waters hold plenty of opportunities for sport fishing for sailfish, wahoo, tuna, dolphin, marlin, snapper and grouper.

Plenty of other opportunities to get out on the water are also available. Dolphin watch tours, jet skis, parasailing, glass bottom boat tours, and sunset cruises are all available year round.

Key West is a great place to experience diving for the first time, or snorkel and view many species of fish and coral on the only coral reef in North America.

The sun drenched hospitality of our island will charm you. It has already made more than one million people come back and visit each year.

The city carries the creative torch of such former residents as Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams and past presidents.”

The Key West wiki says the following about the area:

“Key West is a city in Monroe County, Florida. The city encompasses the island of Key West, the part of Stock Island north of U.S. 1 (the Overseas Highway) (east), Sigsbee Park (north, originally known as Dredgers Key), Fleming Key (north), and Sunset Key (west, originally known as Tank Island). Both Fleming Key and Sigsbee Park are part of Naval Air Station Key West and are inaccessible by civilians. Key West is the county seat of Monroe County. Key West is known as the southernmost city in the Continental United States. It is also the southern terminus of U.S. 1, State Road A1A, the East Coast Greenway and before 1935, the Florida East Coast Railway.

Key West is 129 miles southwest of Miami, Florida, (about 160 driving miles) and 106 miles north-northeast of Havana, Cuba. Cuba, at its closest point, is 94 statute miles south.

Key West is a seaport destination for many passenger cruise ships. The Key West International Airport provides airline service. Hotels and guest houses are available for lodging. Naval Air Station Key West is an important year round training site for naval aviation due to the superb weather conditions. It is also a reason the city was chosen as the Winter White House of President Harry S. Truman. The central business district primarily comprises Duval Street, and includes much of the northwest corner of the island along Whitehead, Simonton, Front, Greene, Caroline, and Eaton Streets and Truman Avenue. The official city motto is “One Human Family.” ”
